There are two categories of lives:
Fixed wing Lives
Each Life has a 4 hour cooldown, adjusted by stack over 30 mins to a minimum 30 minutes on death
2 Modern FW lives : (15,16,17,18)
2 Legacy FW lives: (everything else)
Rotary Wing Lives
Each life has a 2 hour cooldown, adjusted by stack over 30 mins to a minimum 30 minutes on death
2 Attack RW lives (ah64,mi24,oh58,ka50,sa342)
4 Transport RW lives (just uh-1h, mi8, ch47)
Any lower tier can use lives from tier within the category - if you are solely a rotary logistics player you would have 6 lives
Here's the list of airframes per category.

You can only slot fighters at air bases. Those are represented as coloured squares on the map. A base within an objective (circle), is a secondary base. The only native slot available at those is the A-10C. You can however tranfer a life from an airbase to a secondary base.
You can only slot attack helicopters at an air base or a FARP. You can slot transport helicopters anywhere.
You can transfer a life from a main airbase to a secondary airbase. If you deslot after coming to a complete stop, your life will be saved and allow you to reslot later if needed. Note that you can transfer an attack helicopter life to an objective but you won't be able to rearm there.
There are no life restrictions at the unrestricted airfields, and you will always be able to slot at this location. You can transfer your unrestricted life from the free base to any base.
For rotary wings the factory acts as the unrestricted airfield. You can transfer the factory life to any base or FARP.
